"A Salute To Our Troops" Memorial Day Race

by Jason Tom

Firstly, I enjoy running.

It is my time to unwind, sweat, feel alive, reflect on the day, and life in general. It helps me focus and keeps me grounded. It challenges me when you throw in run times, personal records, inclines, declines, and different terrain. On top of that, the weather plays a huge role in it as well.

My kids, a good friend of mine, Jeff, and I ran the 5K together. I really wanted to run the 10K- that’s more my speed- but I didn’t want to leave my kids alone with all the other runners just in case something happened. Jeff’s wife, Paige, and six of their friends ran the 10K. They are ultra runners, really. The 10K was a mere warm-up; they then proceeded to run to Leesburg to get some more miles under their belt.

I like the aspect of the race as it draws people of all walks of life together. I like running with my kids so I can see their potential, their drive, their endurance, and help them when they hit that wall and want to stop running and give up! I try to be a role model for them and lead by example. I tell them that life has many challenges, just like this race. If you put in the hard work, devote yourself to your craft, whatever that is, and are consistent and patient, success will come. It won’t be easy; no one will give it to you; you have to earn it.

After the race, you can visit close to 100 vendors who are showing off their individual craft, their livelihoods, and what inspires them. In all, it is a great day to come out, support, and be in community with one another!
